What is an Ionian? Ionians were ancient, pre-Grecian migrants from across the Aegean Sea. What distinguished them from other cultures and peoples of the world at this time (7th through the 10th century BCE) was their love of free inquiry, science, literature and art. When most other civilizations across the world were burning their citizens for expressing how they felt, the Ionions were pioneering what has become the freethought movement of today. The brilliant intellectual development of Athens in the fifth century BCE must be credited to their Ionian forebearers who did much to contribute to the commerce of ideas and learning. When we refer to the Ionian spirit, we are not referring to any literal spirit, but a mindset, the mindset of freedom to think and express differing views. That is what this site is all about. Whether you agree with us or not, you have a voice here. You can speak your mind and be heard, provided you allow us the same opportunity we give you. You will notice we do not confine the content of this site strictly to religious debate and philosophy, but open it to other areas as well. We believe that too many forums topicalize so much that they leave out proper channels to learn by discussing less important but relevant things. The human experience is a broad one. Life is more than religion and philosophy. Life is about feeling and describing the welcomed sensations of joy and expressing the unwanted hurt of pain. It is about creativity and sharing our wishes and dreams. Somtimes we just need to vent, sometimes we have an idea to get input on, other times we find that we need advice or are compelled to offer. Regardless, these needs make us human, which is why Mr. Holman chose to expand our boundaries to deal with every major humanitarian theme on this board. Thanks for coming our way! Now please read the rules if you haven't already! (JH) |

| I would like to add that if you are a newcomer please post something - anything - in the introduction section. Just say hello even. That way we know you are genuine and not a 'Bot'. It breaks the ice and you will get replies. |
