I don't believe Jay is going to get all his old audience back if he moves back to the Tonight Show. I totally agree that NBC should have extended Conan that same courtesy that they did Leno back when he took over for Carson. Letterman was kicking Leno's ass for a good year and half in the ratings before Jay was able to overtake him.

From what I have seen of him, Conan is as funny as toothache, with an unbelievably silly haircut.

Conan's style of comedy is essentially that of the goofy guy who hangs out with you and your friends and makes random weird comments. I like it OK; I think he's funny sometimes, but less funny other times. His monologues are often terrible, but his interview style is wonderful because he seems to allow the interview to shift topic and direction at whim (though I'm sure it's all somewhat planned, at least). I think that, while it's not everyone's cup of tea, it's far better than Jay Leno, who really doesn't do anything but make the most obvious jokes that come to mind and play the nice old uncle who likes cars.

But I do feel that it's both true that Jay has been callous in some ways towards Conan in this mess and that Jay is being overly blamed. I also feel that it is, quite possibly, the most meaningless and silly thing to have to take a side on. Don't get me wrong, I like Conan, Conan FTW! But I say that with a heavy dose of irony.
