Hello everyone,

I used to come around here a year or two ago, but I got so busy with school (and was going through such a tough time) that I got out of the habit. But now I'm back, so I thought I'd reintroduce myself since there are probably new people. Plus I'll provide some updates on me.

So, I'm Adam. I'm a graduate student in English Literature. Still. It will apparently take 4 years for me to finish my 2 year MA being as I can't seem to get the thesis going. I'm writing my thesis on a science fiction writer named Jack Vance, which seemed like a good idea at the time, and anthropological aspects of his works, with some influence from Foucault if you're interested in that sort of thing.

I grew up in the church of Christ or Church of Christ or whatever they're calling themselves now. My whole family is still heavily into it, but I'm now an atheist. When I was here before I was having a lot of trouble dealing with that. Since then I've gone to a counselor, become much more comfortable with my own beliefs and myself, and moved out of my parents' house, which is probably the best thing I ever did. Sadly, if I don't become more financially stable soon, I may have to move back in (and, worse, get rid of a large chunk of my amazing book collection).

My parents still don't even talk to me about my beliefs, but I'm not surprised considering how my mom reacted to the possibility that the Bible is wrong (very negatively). My dad doesn't even remotely mention it (while my mom will occasionally randomly call me crazy, which is ironic and weird and kind of funny, especially when she once said I needed my brain washed). I've gone to church with them twice, though, since I left. Didn't really mean anything, except that it was really uncomfortable (not really because of anything anyone did, though).

I'm also a halfway decent guitar player.

Hmm...that's about all. So, greetings to all. And thanks to Joe for helping me get back on here.

You're the best, man. I was going to ask you about mom and dad and how things were. Sounds like you're doing well, all things considered. I have more money since we last talked, but I'm in Dallas, which does suck. And I had to briefly move back into mom and dad's earlier this year.

I don't know what it is, but I know it happens to everyone. Do your best and try to find some sanity. I've recently gotten over being sick, but I'm not myself. And now, with movie reviews, a demanding job, and being away from my little niece in SA, my depression never does go down.

You might remember that I can play a little guitar, but not much more than "She'll be Comin Around the Mountain."

It's so good to have you back. Everybody's currently in a transition where we're wondering where we're headed from here (as a board), but fuck, I say we're doing alright and hanging in there.

Hi, shoe Monkey, nice to hear from you again and thanks for the update. Not much has changed here since you pooped out of the tent but as Joe says there has been quite a bit of navel gazing about out future - so your return is well timed and nice.

Through all you have been through, why is it that you end up having to have councelling? Im being rhetorical here of course. I know why. it must be terrible living within a family who cannot see wood for the trees. I never had that experience and Im so glad I missed it. My parents were and are quite rational, however my mother believes in spooky things like God. But she's cracking. I do it by asking her to ask questions I know perfectly well she has never asked before and she's amazed at the answers she finds!

Maybe its no good berating people to tell them they are wrong; sometimes its better to show it and enjoy the small victories.

At least you know you are amongst friends here! Nice to have you back.

Nice to see your return. I agree with Hux, that
somehow, the people needing a shrink didn't get one.

What's the right attitude to 'the religious?' Not family
and friends, just religulous people who are not part of
your circle of acquaintances. I used to be a bit scornful;
now it's more a matter of inner dismay, that has little
impact on my interaction with religulous people. If I'm
bluntl, I pity them, but in a tolerant, passive, kept-to-
myself sense. Except when I'm with other unbelievers,
like here, when no holds are barred!

Hypocrisy if flensed!

Yeah; Jack Vance wrote some interesting stuff. So what are you going to do after you get your MA?

You know, I actually started a book last December. Pain in the ass! I'm a little over 110,000 words into it at this point, and still have at least another 20,000 to go. It'd be a lot easier if I didn't have to juggle it along with all this other shit. It would be nice to have the schedule of a professional author, you know?

Been fun, though.

You know, it never ceases to amaze me how many people are "shocked" when others dare to state the "crazy" idea that the bible is fiction.

You don't even have to get a few pages into the thing before you're going, "Really? Really?... REALLY!? Oh, come on!"

You ever see the Gervais bit on it? Fantastic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaEj3g5GOYA&feature=related

You know, my family are mostly Catholics, so whenever there's a death, that means I need to go to church (I went to Catholic school until 9th grade, btw).

The songs start playing, bringing back memories of melodies that I thought I had forgotten like an old toothache; some priest is rambling on about some crazy shit; everything reeks of that distinctive "Catholic" smell; I can't get comfortable on the damn kneeler, which – by the way – I've been down on for what seems like half an hour, now. Then I start having flashbacks like some Vietnam War Vet, and I suddenly get the odd urge to sing fucking "The First Noel"– a song I must have had to rehearse over a hundred times back in fourth grade – in a church – for our Christmas Concert.

What can I say? It's the Catholic experience.

Joe, have some pots and pans, maybe a pizza box, laying out for me and I'll whip you up some live drums when I finally get a chance to visit.

Incidentally, I don't know "She'll be Comin Around the Mountain" on guitar; I do, however, know "Breaking the Law" by Judas Priest and "Listen To The Flower People" by Spinal Tap, among others.

I think Flower People was the first song I learned, actually.

I can also do "Free Love on the Free Love Freeway", which is quite badass if you're familiar with it.

Good for parties. And no– you can't do it without the three part harmony. No freakin' way.

The first song I ever learned was Polly by Nirvana, just so I could say that was the first song I ever learned when people asked. No one does, though.

I had seen some of the Gervais thing, but not all. It's really great.

I'm not sure what I'll do when I finish, that's part of the reason I'm so slow in finishing. I tried to sell my soul to Geico recently. But it turns out that there's no such thing, so they rejected me. It was fine, though, I was selling my soul for a call center job answering claims calls. Not really my thing, but the money would have been awesome. I think I want to be an editor and do some writing on the side, eventually, but I'm not sure how I'll go about it yet.
