Hello Ionians, I followed John Loftus over here as well. Glad to have found you guys! As I was signing up I put in “oldatheist” for a handle, not seeing that most of you use your real names. I have no need to be anonymous – my name is Tom Carpenter. But I kind of like the handle that popped into my head. I’m an “old” atheist as opposed to the “new” batch of popular atheist writers (Harris, Hitchens, Dawkins, et al) for a couple of reasons. Although I love all those guys and their books, I myself am not an in-your-face atheist. I keep it quiet and to myself mostly. But also I am an old atheist in that (at age 62) I’ve been an atheist almost my entire life. I went to church with my parents when I was a child, but I never really believed that stuff. So it is very interesting to me to read the accounts of “former” Christians – ministers even - thanks John and Joe! I feel very lucky that I never had to go through any tortured de-conversion process. I think I reached my certainty that the supernatural doesn’t exist in 7th grade science class 50 years ago! And that was further solidified in high school when I read a book on world religions and I thought since they all contradict each other none of them can be true. Although I’m not a professional scientist, I am an avid amateur one, and due to my scientific way of thinking, it is totally obvious to me that the natural world (and universe) is all that exists, that there can be no supernatural or paranormal anything. It seems so simple to me. I don’t get why and how people go on and on arguing about things like the resurrection. That’s arguing about how many angels can dance on a pin. Stupid argument! The resurrection never happened – it’s impossible – end of argument. There are no miracles. So that’s the nut in the nutshell. Besides that, I’m a very happy grandpa of three, I’m a software sales guy, and my hobby is building electric vehicles (and I’ll turn that into a side-business when I retire). Good to meet you all! Thanks! PS: Peanut Butter?! Wow! This is my group! I eat mine piled high, plus honey, on a cracker. |

'Ere, what's all this ageism being bandied about? Nuttin wrong with the sexed-up sixties, y'hear? Great to make your acquaintance, Tom. EVs sounds like a great 'thing' to be in to. I dabble in a little electrical stuff, but total amateur, really. Always fascinated me - those flowing electrons. ![]() |
