Hello to all! I have come to this forum in hopes of finding opportunity for good dialogue. I am a soldier. Unfortunately, I have had some negative experiences being an unbeliever in the military. Still, I am very proud to be an American soldier. I am an ex-christian who almost lost my family because of the retarded doctrines of the archaic and barbaric Judeo-Christian scriptures. What a drag, huh?

That's enough for now. Hope to have a good time here at Ionian Spirit!

It is an honor to have you, Army Guy, and thank you for your service. My hat's off to you. I'd imagine you would run into resistance with the fundies in the military. Do share your experiences. Again, glad to have you!

Currently, I am stationed state-side. I have not been to Iraq or Afghanistan yet. My unit is on call for deployment to Afghanistan, but that may not actually happen until the beginning of the year.

And Joe, just to give you a little idea of some of the bullpooh that I've had to deal with, in AIT I was singled out by a platoon sergeant for not wanting to attend a church special. To be quite honest, I wouldn't have minded attending. No, I didn't believe the crap they were preaching, but it would have been a chance to have a change of scenery and I could have taken the opportunity to question some folks about their beliefs. But I had made plans already on my one day off per week, and if I was going to be bowing down to anything, it was going to be the bartender at Buffalo Wild Wings!

The sergeant stood before the company, and asked who had no-rel-pref or Catholic on their dog tags, and if these soldiers would like not to attend. He then proceeded to make fun of us, saying that we were weak minded, and were unwise because we were gonna miss out on a chance to learn something. Being an ex protestant for nearly 26 years, I wondered just how much I would learn! And for those of the group who were pagans and Catholics, what would have been so wise about learning more fairy tales?

Always raise hell about stuff like that. It's "the principle of the thing," as they say. As much as is possible, threaten to take issues to a higher authority if you get knocked down on something. The "God and country" people do so much damage when not opposed. As long as you are in line with everything else that is expected of you, this shouldn't be a problem.
