Question for Writers

So, this goes out to all those who consider themselves to be writers, fiction and non.

Do you ever listen to music when you write? What kind of why?

I've been writing a novel for a few months now (close to 60,000 words in, baby!) and I do listen to music when I write. Not all the time – sometimes I prefer silence – but music helps open the floodgates of creativity a lot of the time for me. It really helps set a mood in addition to getting me into the right frame of mind for the scene I'm writing.

As such, I tend to listen to stuff that best fits what I plan on writing in a particular session. Usually, it's instrumental stuff. Classical, scores, whatever. Other times, it's one of the many bands I listen to and everyone's more than familiar with my musical tastes.

Also, I write better at night. Easier to get immersed.

Anyone else?

Me too Bonzo. I listen to music when I write as well. My selection also depends on what I'm writing.

When I used to write computer program-like
stuff, I used to do it through the night, when
almost total silence reigns.

Is it a matter of focus? When I'm proofing any
literary work for someone, I usually prefer the
silence of night-time.

The phone doesn't ring then, either.

As a sort-of PS, when I am writing something,
usually article length only, I always like to put
it aside for 24 or more hours. I can usually write
things in a way that clears comprehension con-
fusion. Then two days later, I re-address a tract
I've written and hang my head, asking, 'how did
I make such a enigma of that?'

When working from a PoV of knowledge, its such
an easy trap to fall into.
