For some reason these people are starting to get on my nerves lately. I mean, I try to avoid them, and usually realize that they believe pretty much what I used to, but lately I've seen and heard things that just annoy me. One thing that bothers me a lot is these people that say things like this lovely young woman on facebook: "well i just wanted to say God is AWESUM....i dont see how there can be nonbelievers because if you look around you can see all the wonderful things he is doing for us everyday...it is truely amazing :D" To which I so want to respond: "and he taught me how to spel and use capitolization!" Then there is the second sentence there, if that's really a sentence starting after that incorrectly formatted ellipsis. What "wonderful things" is this supposed God really doing for you? I mean, really? Where is he doing these things? It must be just you, because I've seen other people who apparently don't get the same privileges. It annoys me how much these people have deluded themselves. Kind of like this kid on youtube that kind of gets on my nerves with his sad attempts at biblical criticism and defense of the resurrection. All he does is quote from fundamentalist and evangelical "scholars," especially the always astute James Patrick Holding and the brilliant William Lane Craig. I mean, how can this kid not see the ridiculousness of the argument from the empty tomb? The kid even accepts evolution and defends it on occasion, which makes me wonder how on earth he can't see the backwards logic he turns around and defends the next week. Of course, with him I realize he's just a kid and hasn't reached the stage of critical thinking where he can really consider these things, but still, it annoys me that this kid is basically brainwashing himself by reading these people. Then there are these people who for some reason can't review a book without ranting about their lack of knowledge of biblical criticism and their ridiculous biases. These people on amazon who can't review a book on biblical criticism without saying something stupid like, "This guy is biased against Jesus, and he doesn't believe that God wrote the Bible by using his amazing puppeteer powers!" Really!? Maybe that's because he's actually read the Bible! What's with this "biased against miracles" argument anyway? I mean, why don't these people accept any other miracles? And how come I never hear anyone point out their stupidly ridiculous hypocrisy to them? There's people like this guy who reviewed a book by Raymond Brown, which I haven't read, who claims that Brown "accepts such ridiculous ideas as that Paul didn't write the Pastorals! Even though his name is on them! It's just common sense that he wrote them!" [not a direct quote, but basically it] Well, I hate to break it to the kid, but just because he doesn't understand the arguments doesn't mean they aren't accurate. Well, actually, I take that back. I would love to point out how ridiculous this is to this poor deluded kid, but I know it wouldn't make any difference. Anyway, normally these people don't bother me, but lately I think I've just seem some really dumb things that particularly bothered me. Sorry for the random rant. Edit: I realize this is all obvious stuff, but I kind of had to vent. Edited by magicshoemonkey, Feb 23 2008, 12:46 PM.

I'm going through a lot of the same changes. I find myself literally bursting out laughing at some of the stuff I hear; whereas before I had this polite respect for it. I may not have agreed with it but I allowed people their own beliefs. Now I'm seeing just how ridiculous it is and I can't hide it. It's not only with religion, it's can also be documentary's on ghosts and spirits which I used to like watching. I'm just so much more skeptical. As I keep moving past it, it's like a breath of fresh air. You find your voice and you're confident in it. You're not intimidated by the bullshit. |

I'm a sage on this stuff, guys. The only way to alleviate the spawning bitterness is to picture in your mind a big brown cow chewing grass as you find yourself listening or watching the religiots talk. Doesn't help, really, but it can be just enough of a relief to keep from gritting your teeth to the point of getting a headache. Do you see now why I hate this species and am writing a third book, denigrating mankind?? These horrible divisions are responsible for bloodshed and discord worldwide, and yet they are allowed to continue, while the hiding ghost remains silent and watches our turmoil unfold! Nope, it's all gotta go! |

Hey man, I love random ramblings and rants. Good one too, by the way. I don't know, I find the whole religious thing to be guilty of complete stupidity on all counts. I never politely disagree with anybody. People, in general, just piss me off. Still, I can handle some religious people when they aren't talking about religion. For starters, I've never dated an atheist or agnostic. Just never found one I wanted to date. So, unless they're on of those psychotic types that have to mention Jesus or some other religious figure at every opportunity, I can handle them. But, people in general, regardless of beliefs, tend to annoy me. Too many disturbing elements in many of them. I'm getting a lot better at dealing with that sort of shit though. And all those psychos that try to shove religion down your throat with ther "bulletproof" logic? I still laugh my ass of at them.

By "wonderful things" I think she must be forgetting things like horrible diseases, wars and tortures in the name of her AWESUM God, and, of course, good ol' bigotry. Adding to the rant: I'm tired of seeing so many women on dating sites saying that they want a man who "loves Jesus" and what not. Often, these women are divorced or single mothers. I don't see anything wrong with them being so, but they should avoid throwing the religious crap around. So, where are all the nice Non-believer girls? |

I recently heard a story about two Mexican children who have some disorder (probably something with their skin's thickness or melanin...) in which their skin blisters to a terrifying degree. They can't walk or they blister. They can't LAY DOWN or they blister. They wake up, dependant on which end their body weight was concentrated, blistered as all hell. They apparently tried to play soccer outside once for about 5 minutes, and came inside screaming, writhing in pain... How, in the holiest of all fucking hell's, is this something AWESUM? Fact is, these aren't kids trying to do anything more than live their fucking lives... Live out their childhoods while they still have that opportunity. Simply embrace the fact that they are mobile and alive, because they don't have much else to look forward to. That's not AWESUM... That's downright terrible. I also believe there are poor haitian slummers who happen to be eating dirt. Blessed be Jesus! There's also this guy... Praised be Allah! Oh, ma' bad, Allah U Akhbar! You've also got the national scurge that is booming... That wonderful disease Dustin Hoffman so kindly showed the world... (Drum roll here...) AUTISM! Zeus be heralded! But there's no sense complaining... Because, fact is, it's not any of the aboves faults! Not a one! Wild guess as to why that might be so? Anybody? |

At the risk of provoking further wrath (wroth) I proffer the observation that the only thing you should be surprised at with this stuff is that you're surprised at it. Chug-a-lug-33.6k-Perry |

Damn, man, cool saying. Makes loads of sense, too. Why be SURPRISED at stupidity? It happens far too often to be surprised at... -_- |

OK, on soap box of collected aphorisms, now, by popular acclaim . . . Paraphrased: The invincible ignorance of religionists arises because they think they think; Therefore they'll never know that they don't know. (Exits, stage left, in a hurry, even) |

...or how about: "The invincible ignorance of religionists arises because they think they think; Therefore, they "know" that they know, which means they'll never know any better. |

Actually believing that you "know" everything is always a dangerous position. I would think that would become even more apparent when your proof is a two thousand year old book. |

Back when I was 'Mr. Science', I used to think I knew everything... Somewhere along the line, I realized how fucking stupid and average I really am! Still though, does anybody else think that really smart people have really huge ego's? For instance, in my Calc class (and trust me, I'm strong as hell in math...), I've asked the really 'smart' dude who's, like, the one sophomore kid in the class full of seniors, what he thought about something from a math problem I didn't get. He looked at me like I was fucking retarded, then preceded to press on a complete and total 'holier than thou' attitude as if I had to get fucking after-school tutoring and shit to help me with my mental disability. Better than that was when I got the problem right and he didn't. People like this, the ones who threw away their childhoods to sit at home and watch their Warcraft character excel in level, all the same as the ones who get exceptionally pissed off at people they think are dumber than them, need to change their fucking attitudes. I can't count the number of times I've seen this from other real 'smart' people... For the love of christ, I used to kinda be one of them, but I still manage to have several close friends and have the ability to talk to people! Thinking you know everything is a stupid move. Period. |

Yes, and the lesson is easily remembered in the saying: "How quickly the tables turn in life!" It is the irony of life that the guy who bragged the most in high school about how he's not gonna be the one flipping burgers for a living WILL be the one flipping burgers! The gal who boasts of her prettiness will very likely grow up to be a funny looking bitch who lives running from creditors. Maybe it's just an observation, but that is what life has in store for boasters. I believe this is the case because one who boasts always hasn't learned what it means to excel past obstacles and negative forces countermanding their efforts. So, in a way, boasting is a SIGNAL -- a flair, if you will -- of someone who isn't smart enough to know not to brag, someone void of wisdom. |

Or, the moment you think you know it all - you're dead. Ponder that for a bit. |
